Pulse Express is a finger-tip pulse-oximetry breakout that pairs a high-sensitivity MAX30102 PPG optical sensor with a MAX32664D biometric sensor hub. The MAX32664D runs Maxim’s licensed SpO₂, heart-rate, and blood-pressure-trend algorithms directly on-chip — your microcontroller just reads computed values over I²C, with no DSP work required on the host side.

Features

  • Maxim MAX30102 PPG optical sensor — red + IR LEDs and integrated photodiode
  • Maxim MAX32664D biometric sensor hub — on-chip SpO₂, heart-rate, and blood-pressure-trend algorithms
  • I²C output of computed values — no host-side filtering or algorithm development
  • 5 V-tolerant logic with 0.1″ breadboard-friendly pin headers
  • Low power — designed for wearable, finger-based applications
  • Works with Protocentral OpenView for live visualization
  • Complete KiCad design files — schematic and PCB layout on GitHub
  • Open-source: hardware released under CERN-OHL-P v2, Arduino libraries under MIT

Important notice

This device is intended for research, education, and evaluation use only. It is not a medical diagnostic instrument and is not FDA, CE, or FCC approved for consumer use.

Calibrating SpO₂

If measured SpO₂ readings stay pinned at 100% or drift away from a reference oximeter, you may need to tune the algorithm’s “R value” — especially when an optical shield sits between the LED and the finger. See Analog Devices app note AN6845 for the calibration procedure.
