ECG

Last updated May 18, 2026

The ECG screen records a 30-second three-lead electrocardiogram and displays your live heart rate during the measurement. After 30 seconds the recording is saved to the device and Move enters sleep to conserve battery.

How to take an ECG measurement

  1. Wear the watch on one wrist as normal.

  2. Open the ECG screen and tap Measure ECG.

  3. Rest both hands on a stable surface. Place two fingers of your other hand on the metal bezel at the top of the watch — completing the circuit between the wrist electrodes and the third lead on the bezel.

Correct hand placement: two fingers of the opposite hand on the watch bezel, hands not overlapping

  4. Stay still for 30 seconds. The screen shows the live heart rate while the recording is running.

  5. When the recording completes, Move displays a success message. The trace is stored on the device — view it later in the HealthyPi Move app under Fetch Logs.

ECG playback is on the device for now

ECG recordings are currently viewable only via the device-log fetch. In-app playback of the waveform is planned for a future app release.

When to measure — and when not to

For best signal quality

Do:

  • Sit or stand still — motion artefacts dominate the signal if you’re walking or shivering.
  • Wait a few minutes after exercise so your heart rate is at rest.
  • Make sure your skin is clean and dry under the watch and on the bezel.

Don’t:

  • Record while Move is connected to USB-C power — mains coupling adds 50/60 Hz noise.
  • Use ECG readings to diagnose or react to a medical condition. Move is not a medical device. If you have chest pain, shortness of breath, or fainting, seek medical attention rather than relying on the watch.
How the 3-lead ECG works

A standard wearable ECG uses a single lead between two electrodes — which works but is noisy. HealthyPi Move uses a three-lead arrangement for higher signal quality:

  • Two leads are picked up by the gold-plated electrode pads on the underside of the watch, in contact with your wrist.
  • The third lead is the stainless-steel bezel on the top of the watch — which is why you place two fingers of your other hand on it during a recording. The two-handed contact forms a closed Einthoven-triangle-style loop across the chest, producing a much cleaner trace than a single-wrist pickup.

The front-end is the MAX30001 integrated biopotential AFE — the same chip used in our MAX30001 ECG & BioZ Breakout product. See Know your sensors for the full signal chain.
